PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Banfield Freeway Project, which closed eastbound I-84 between I-5 and I-205, caused a few driving headaches on Saturday for motorists trying to get through that area.

That section of highway is the most traveled section in the state of Oregon with 171,000 vehicles using it each day.

The 5.5 mile stretch of road is being repaved and drivers need to be patient. The eastbound lanes closed on Friday night and are scheduled to re-open at 5 a.m. Monday.

Depending on the weather and some other factors, the schedule for the next phases of the project is:

  • I-84 westbound closed from I-205 to I-5 for paving from 10 p.m. Friday, July 19 through 5 a.m. Monday, July 22
  • I-84 westbound closed from I-205 to I-5 for lane striping and sign replacement from 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5.

The east-west alternate routes include Powell Boulevard (US-26), Sandy Boulevard, Burnside Street and Lombard Street (US-30.) The blue and red TriMet MAX trains will run the length of the I-84 project area.

Overall, the project will resurface more than five miles of I-84 and its ramps between I-5 and I-205.
