BEAVERTON, Ore. (KOIN) — Two churches were vandalized by graffiti sometime before Wednesday morning, but one of the churches turned the hateful graffiti on its head.
The outside of the New Vision Fellowship Church on SW Menlo Drive was spray painted with upside down crosses and “666.” Church officials filed a police report, but rather than repaint, the youth group is painting over the vandalism. In their words, they are “replacing a message of hate with love.”
Youth pastor Samuel Wilson said they were disappointed when they first saw the graffitti. But they used it as an opportunity to come together for something fun and creative.
The youth group’s artwork represents love and they titled it Beauty for Ashes.
“Some people intend something for bad,” Wilson said. “We wanted to be a group that came back with love and grace and say, hey, we can do art, too.”
At about the same time, the Unity Church of Beaverton on SW 5th was also spray painted.
Police believe these incidents are connected and are being investigated as criminal mischief.
