PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Unions, homeless advocates and others gathered in Holladay Park on Saturday to draw attention to the plight of people struggling to survive.
“Portland Rising,” a project of Portland Jobs with Justice, wants cities and corporations to take note.
“The basic idea is we want a healthy community here, and that means good jobs, that means the working class people are taken care of. It means that the people on the streets have a place to go,” said organizer Ben Marston. “All these things are important to us, and I think they’re important to Portland.’
Homeless advocate Ibrahim Mubarak said, “Each aspect of life is connected, and if they don’t speak up for themselves, and they don’t do something now about what’s happening in this economic crunch, they’re going to wind up living on the street.”
