PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Under-age people have used fake IDs for years to get into bars and clubs, especially on the busiest nights when they think security guards won’t notice.

As fake IDs get more sophisticated, even experts say the differences are subtle.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission and area bars have battled fake IDs for many years, but the fake IDs are becoming more sophisticated.

Security manager John Kaffe told KOIN 6 News the false cards are ordered on websites, some of them from overseas.

“A lot of people say they’re ordering them online from group rates in China and they get, like, 10 of their friends together and get a discount,” he said. “You give them the birthday you want on there and your name and whatever information on there and they can just turn around and sell that information to who knows who.”

The fake IDs come with manipulated bar codes, hologram technology, black light features and micro-printing.

Inspectors said they’ve confiscated more fake IDs in recent months than ever before, in part because of an education campaign pointing out the signs.

“I’m sure we’re seeing a very small percentage of what’s really out there,” said Shannon Hoffeditz with the OLCC.

But even the OLCC is unsure how many underaged people have fake ID cards.

“I know that they’ve told me they’ve arrested people as young as 16 down here drinking in the bars that already have stamps from other bars that they’ve been to,” she said.

People caught with a fake ID face arrest, a fine and/or education classes.
