PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Rescuers pulled a 56-year-old man to safety after he fell down a 50-foot cliff while searching for his dog near Estacada Sunday evening.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office reports that Richard Shaw of Portland and his wife were trying to find their dog in the Fish Creek area, off Highway 224, when he fell down the cliff at about 6 p.m.
Out of cell phone range, Shaw’s wife flagged down a passerby, who was able to get a signal and call 911. Several agencies responded, and using a rope system, hoisted Shaw to safety.
He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with significant leg injuries, the sheriff’s office said. As of Tuesday, he was in fair condition.
His dog, Lacy May, was later discovered near another drop-off and was safely rescued. She had no serious injuries.
