MILWAUKIE, Ore. (KOIN) — What was once thought to be an isolated incident now has Clackamas County authorities investigating at least two more cases of vehicles vandalized by swastikas and racial slurs.
The vehicles were parked on Southeast La Mesa Way and Southeast Wanda Drive in Milwaukie when they were tagged, investigators told KOIN 6 News.
Jeanne Snair just moved to Wanda Drive with her kids a few days ago and found her car vandalized Wednesday morning.
“We thought we were coming to a nicer neighborhood and then this is our welcome to the neighborhood,” she told KOIN 6 News. “On the window, it looked like it said, ‘I love’ and then something I couldn’t read. And then on the door it said ‘Six-dash-Six.'”
Snair isn’t the only victim. Vandals hit at least three vehicles in the neighborhood, including a truck with a swastika and racial slur.
Jonah Stewart snapped a picture of the damage to his minivan on Southeast La Mesa Way — a swastika, but painted backwards.
He and his brother, Elijah, said it makes their family scared that they may have been targeted out of hate.
“We are pretty much the only, in this who area, mixed [race] family,” he said.
The sheriff’s office is not calling this a hate crime at this time. Law enforcement said they are investigating this case as criminal mischief.
“We don’t know if it was specific to this family, and there was some motivation behind it,” said Sgt. Robert Wurpes with Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, “or if it was just a random act by somebody who doesn’t even know what it means.”
Neighbors recognize this could be the work of some bored kids causing trouble, but say the hurtful words and symbols are disturbing — and are not welcome around here.
“I’m just hoping it was, like, a kid who didn’t know what he was doing,” said a member of one of the family’s hit.
