PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Though people lined up to get into the new Microsoft store in downtown Portland for the chance to get free Weezer tickets, community leaders are excited about what this store portends for the economic growth of the area.

The first 1000 people through the doors at the Microsoft store on SW Yamhill at 4th Avenue got free tickets for the Weezer concert in Pioneer Courthouse Square on Friday.

The excitement among the fans was palpable.

“It’s like a party, it’s pretty exciting,” Spencer Montoya told KOIN 6 News. “We’ve had all kinds of stuff, from dancing to music. The radio station is here, so it’s really cool. A lot bigger than I expected.”

It also is a good sign for the city’s economic growth and the expansion of retail efforts downtown.

“We’ve been working for the last several years on revitalizing the retail landscaping in downtown Portland and this year we’re happy to report we have a very low vacancy rate,” said Lisa Frisch, the retail development manager for Portland Business Alliance.

This is the only location in Oregon where Microsoft is opening a store, and more stores — including a Target — will open soon.

“We have about 20 new retailers opening in downtown Portland,” Frisch said.
