Man arrested on attempted murder in gang shooting

(KOIN) – Detectives have apprehended a suspect accused in a Portland gang shooting that left a 19-year-old man injured last week.

Rasool Islam, 19, faces counts of attempted murder, second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm in the June 13 shooting of Amel Johnson.

Portland police Gang Enforcement Team detectives arrested Islam on June 14 after running surveillance on his home in the 5300 block of Southeast 136th Avenue. Islam and Johnson are gang associates, police said.

Johnson was shot at East Burnside Street and 148th Avenue. A motive was not confirmed.

Islam was lodged in the Multnomah County Jail.  He was expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
