PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Multnomah County medical examiner’s reported that an inmate found dead in February in the county detention center died of a heroin overdose.
David Chilton had been in jail about eight months. The 55-year-old was accused of robbing a Portland bank, carjacking a car and pulling a gun on a Portland State University security guard.
The Oregonian reports the sheriff’s office delayed releasing the cause of death until Thursday because of an investigation.
Lt. Steve Alexander says drugs such as heroin are smuggled into the jail, even though inmates are strip-searched when they are booked.
