PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 15-year-old boy who was rescued after spending an estimated 30 minutes underwater in the Willamette River has died.
The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Thursday that Cesar Campuzano passed away at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. The cause and manner of death was not immediately confirmed.
On Monday evening Campuzano was with a group of friends when he jumped off the pier at Rogers Landing in Newberg. Friends said they did not realize he couldn’t swim, and when they tried to help him, he began pushing them under.
The Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office reports that the Newberg Dive Rescue Team responded and pulled him out of the water about 30 minutes later. He was alive but in critical condition. Emergency responders conducted CPR before airlifting him to Legacy.
Campuzano was a freshman at Newberg High School.
