HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN) —  On Tuesday night Hillsboro’s city council approved changing city code to allow the discharge of weapons on airport property.

It’s part of a plan to eliminate wildlife at the Hillsboro Airport. Roaming coyotes, deer and birds pose safety risks for face-paced airplane traffic.

The new ordinance amends Section 7.08.010 of the Hillsboro Municipal Code. The first reading of the ordinance was approved May 21.

Under the new rules, Hillsboro can use weapon noise and other noisemakers to scare away any wildlife that poses a threat. Officials also can kill the animals when necessary.

This is already done at the Port of Portland, which takes “non-lethal action whenever possible,” according to an earlier report.
