PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The summer road construction season may include some of the worst traffic congestion in Portland history as I-84 will be closed from I-5 to I-205 for a repaving project.
The Oregon Department of Transportation has more than 100 construction projects planned, but the one that will affect the most people is the I-84 job.
Drivers should prepare for huge delays, ODOT officials said, while the repaving project is underway. The road is badly rutted and drivers complain the deep grooves make it hard to stay in the correct lane.
ODOT sees it as a safety issue and is planning weekend closures of I-84 to help crews get the work done in a timely manner.
“We want people to be prepared, to plan ahead,” OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings told KOIN 6 News. “We know that there are real lives at stake in work zones. These are real people who are out there working to make our roadways better and to make them safer.”
The work is expected to get underway after the Fourth of July. Closures are tentatively planned for the weekends of July 12, July 19 and August 3. Weather is a factor in the closures.
