VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) — Luke Ashe has a knack for wowing people. A year-and-a-half ago, he dedicated himself to eating right and exercising and lost 100 pounds.

Then in January his grandmother found him unresponsive in his room.

He lapsed into a mysterious coma.

“I just kind of fell over and went into a dark space like a black hole, kind of just didn’t wake up,” he told KOIN 6 News.

Then just as suddenly, he was awake.

“It’s just one of those things where I was dead one minute and awake the next. Kind of didn’t know where I was. Just kind of woke up out of it.”

His friends and family never gave up hope. His mother, Gwenn Ashe, said, “I just knew miracles happened.”

“It’s amazing to have my friend back,” said Jeremy Brock.

The doctors are still not sure what caused him to lapse into a coma, his mother said. “All they say is it was lack of oxygen and he had multiple mini strokes to the brain.”

On March 27, while he was at Pacific Specialty and Rehabilitative Care in Vancouver, loved ones saw the miracle they sought.

Jeremy Brock flipped on the light in his room, “and he just kind of blinked his eyes like, ‘What are you doing?’ He didn’t say anything, but you could see the expression on his face.”

He started reacting and speaking, and now Ashe is learning life again, including how to stand. The 27-year-old has a long journey ahead but he’s making progress.

When asked what he wants, he said “to walk, to drive, to go on vacations.”

For his mother, his continuing recovery is “the most wonderful feeling I’ve ever experienced in my whole life.”

People said he’s an inspiration.

“It inspires me to stay focused and not give up,” he said. “If I can inspire someone else, that’s all that matters.”
