(KOIN) – A 17-year-old Dundee boy died when he crashed an SUV into a tree Saturday evening, sparking a vehicle fire.

The victim was identified Monday as Alex Neel Weiler.

At about 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Weiler was driving his family’s 2001 Chevrolet Suburban on Northeast Fox Farm Road, near Hidden Springs Road, when he lost control while negotiating a sharp corner and collided into a tree, the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office reports, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Witnesses, a passerby and a Newberg-Dundee police officer attempted to pull Weiler out of the vehicle. However, they were unable to reach him because of the flames and intense heat. Weiler died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators believe that speed and slick roads from recent rainfall contributed to the crash.

Oregon State Police, Newberg and Dundee fire departments and the Yamhill County Crimes Victim Advocate assisted at the scene.
