PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As he held a symposium inside, hundreds of people gathered outside Maitripa College in Portland to watch a video feed of the Dalai Lama.
The symposium, titled ‘Life after Life’ focused on the role that science and spirituality play in understanding environmental issues.
The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader is in the middle of a three-day visit to Oregon for an environmental summit.
At the intersection of SE 11th and Market, the hundreds watching the video feed felt it was their chance to see the Dalai Lama in person during his visit. For many, just the chance to see him was enough. For others, though, it was a spiritual experience to hear him share his thoughts on religion and the environment.
“I feel graced,” Anne Girardot told KOIN 6 News. “I feel like there are lots of people here with the same energy, which is a wish for good for the world, compassion, and I feel really blessed to be here.”
The Dalai Lama came outside later and spent a few brief moments with those who waited. He mingled with the crowd before leaving with a gentle wave to the crowd.
He has a speaking engagement in Eugene on Friday and will be back in Portland for events at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.
