PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Participants in Portland’s May 1 marches made their way through downtown Portland Wednesday afternoon.
As a result, traffic was rerouted and delays were expected around downtown during Portland’s afternoon commuting hours.
Marchers gathered at Southwest 9th Avenue and Stark Street at 3 p.m. The march through downtown started at 4 p.m.
The 2013 May Day march was granted a permit by the city of Portland. However, late Tuesday police said they have become aware of plans for some marches that had not applied for permits.
On May Day 2012, thousands of people filled the streets — many also celebrating International Workers’ Day in a permitted march. However several spin-off marches, in the midst of Occupy protests, clashed with police. Thirty-six people were arrested.
