FOREST GROVE,Ore. (KOIN) — Two fires in western Washington County caused considerable damage to barns and killed a number of chickens.

Just before 2 p.m., a heat lamp in a chicken coop set a barn on fire in Cornelius and the blaze spread quickly from the winds. About 20 firefighters put that blaze out, but all but one of the chickens died. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

The second fire caused about $300,000 in damage to a barn at 47600 SW Easterday Road in Forest Grove. When the volunteer firefighters arrived, the barn was fully engulfed and efforts to contain it were hampered by a downed power line. A large motor home, tractors, a boot, tools and other equipment were damaged.

No one was hurt in either fire.
