SWEET HOME, Ore. (KOIN) – An 85-year-old woman was killed in a head-on crash near Sweet Home Wednesday evening.
Oregon State Police (OSP) identified the victim as Leretta Jean Moore of Sweet Home.
According to OSP, Moore was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala west on Highway 20 when she attempted a left turn onto Dew Road, located about three miles east of Sweet Home. Moore reportedly pulled into the left turn lane, and then, without stopping, turned directly in front of a 1997 Audi that was traveling east on the highway, leading to a collision.
Moore was transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, where she was pronounced dead.
Moore’s 32-year-old grandson and 10-year-old great-grandson were passengers in the car. Both sustained minor injuries that did not require transport to a hospital. OSP initially identified them as the victim’s son and grandson, but later issued a correction.
The driver and only occupant of the Audi, 19-year-old Tyrell Rankin of Lebanon, was not hurt.
The crash partially shut down the highway for about two hours. OSP is investigating what may have caused the crash.
