TUALITIN, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland metro area will soon have a Cabela’s, an outdoor sporting goods giant that is equal parts business and tourist destination.

The hunting and fishing retailer announced Thursday that it is opening a 100,000-square-foot store in a redeveloped area across Interstate 5 from the Nyberg Woods Shopping Center, 7061 Nyberg Road in Tualitin.

“We are proud that the world’s foremost outfitter, Cabela’s, has chosen Tualatin to be its home in the greater Portland region,” said Tualatin Mayor Lou Ogden in a statement.

When it opens in 2014, the store will feature a Gun Library, Bargain Cave, Fudge Shop, indoor archery range and mountain replica.

The only other Cabela’s in Oregon at this time is a 58,000-square foot store in Springfield. The planned one in Tualitin will be nearly twice that size, and is expected to create about 300 jobs.

Cabela’s is different than most outdoor stores, said Mark Goldsmith, the general manager of the Springfield store.

“Most of the taxidermy you see is from our customers,” he said. The decorations are wall-to-wall in the store.

Customers like Ron Barrowcliff are sold on the store and often can’t get enough.

“You ask them a question and they know it,” he said. “You go to other places, they say let me know and I’ll see if I can find an answer for you.”

Cabela’s began as a catalog service in 1961. It’s headquartered in Nebraska and currently has 44 stores across the US and Canada. The company is planning 13 more stores to open by the end of next year.
