The San Jose Earthquakes have placed sanctions on their supporters’ group, the 1906 Ultras, following the alleged assault of a Portland Timbers fan before a contentious April 14 match in Portland.
In a statement released Saturday, the team stated that following a meeting with both Major League Soccer and 1906 Ultras leadership, it decided to put the group on an “indefinite probation.” It also issued the following sanctions:
- The 1906 Ultras’ travel privileges have been indefinitely suspended until further notice
– The 1906 Ultras will not be allowed to utilize controlled smoke at any match
– Due to the probation, language within the group on matchdays will be strictly monitored
On April 14, 40-year-old James Decker of Lake Oswego claims he was attacked by a large group of San Jose fans while he sat in his car at a red light near Jeld-Wen Field. No suspects have been identified or arrested.
Following the incident, the 1906 Ultras issued their own statement on their homepage:
“The 1906 Ultras pride ourselves on an intense devotion to the San Jose Earthquakes and supporting our Boys in Black and Blue. However, we do not condone violence or criminal conduct.
“We are troubled by some of the things we witnessed and have heard about before and after the Quakes-Timbers match at Jeld-Wen Field in Portland on Sunday evening. We are in the process of investigating what transpired, and if and to the extent any UItras members were involved, they will be removed from the group.
“Additionally, if and to the extent any innocent victim(s) were actually damaged by improper action(s) of Ultras members, the 1906 Ultras intend to see that such innocent victim(s) are fully compensated, either directly by the individuals involved, or, failing that, indirectly by the 1906 Ultras as an organization.
“The 1906 Ultras leadership will fully cooperate with any police investigations and will seek to ensure that events like those that transpired yesterday do not occur again.”
The two sides played again Sunday in San Jose. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
