PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A TriMet bus driver was stabbed in the leg by a rider who demanded to use a portable restroom along the bus route.

The man then ran into the neighborhood at SE 92nd Avenue and Flavel Street around 11 p.m. Saturday, officials said in a release.

The bus driver told police he was using the restroom when he heard banging on the door. He opened it up and saw the man who demanded to use the restroom and then stabbed the driver in the leg.

The bus driver was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The driver, identified by TriMet as Brian Nixon, said his “main concern right now is catching the man who did this,” in a prepared statement issued by TriMet Sunday. “I appeal to everyone to listen to the description and be on the lookout for him.”

Nixon said he is “doing well, but I need some time to rest and recover.”

The suspect is described as a bearded African-American man in his 30s, around 5-feet-9. He was wearing a black-and-red coat, brown pants and stocking cap. He may be a transient, police said.

On Sunday TriMet sent out the following statement: “While we are thankful that the physical injury sustained by the operator was minor and he is reportedly doing well, such senseless acts are disturbing,” the statement reads. “TriMet is providing full cooperation and assistance to police in their efforts to catch the man responsible — so he will not be able to hurt anyone else in our community.”
