DONALD, Ore. (KOIN) — A 4-year-old boy died from a single gunshot early Saturday night in the Marion County town of Donald, prompting a detailed investigation into the incident and leaving neighbors distraught.

Police received a call around 5:30 p.m. and went to a home in the 10000 block of Main Street NE. Soon, a few blocks were taken over by investigators as nearly a dozen police cars and Life Flight answered the call.

The boy’s name has not been released by authorities, but neighbors remember a sweet child who waved to others.

People put up a makeshift memorial as close to the boy’s home as they could without crossing the crime tape.

Neighbor Danielle White used to count on her regular encounters with the boy to cheer her up.

“He was a cute little boy,” she told KOIN 6 News. “He’d stand in the window and wave at us. He’d play with his cars and show us all his little toys and stuff. It’s sad to see something like this happen, especially with how sweet he was.”
