PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An exhausted Brian Berchtold was looking ahead toward the Boston Marathon finish line, now clouded with smoke, when a second bomb went off.
“We just hit the ground and debris was flying everywhere,” Berchtold, arriving Tuesday night back in Portland, told KOIN 6 News. “And the minute that second one went off we found someplace to go. I hurdled the barricade and went right for the Apple store.”
He ran to the basement of the Apple store. State troopers armed with AK semi-automatic weapons cleared him and others to the back alley.
He said he wasn’t hurt by the explosion, but was close enough to feel it.
“I just felt debris,” Berchtold said. “…As we ducked and covered our heads you could just feel it falling down in that area.”
Tuesday also marked an emotional return home for Devon Johnson. She was on a chaotic subway when the explosions occurred.
“I was traveling alone,” Johnson said. “I had friends there but when everything was happening I couldn’t think about anything but my family.”
