PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Friends and supporters are pulling together to retrofit the home of a Portland officer partially paralyzed in a police training accident.
Portland Police Officer Paul Meyer was injured this past November when a tree fell on him during ATV training on. The freak accident left him paralyzed from the waist down.
On Saturday night, friends threw a party and dance for him at the Hilton hotel — to raise money to make his home accessible.
“It’s so humbling,” Meyer told KOIN. “And it’s amazing to see how many good people there are out there.”
Meyer and his family have been living in a rental home since he left the hospital.
“The biggest thing for me is to say thank you to everybody,” Meyer said. “Just to be able to do that means a lot to me.”
Among the improvements his supporters would like to see is to make the home entirely wheelchair accessible, including installation of an elevator so Meyer can go upstairs.
