OREGON CITY, Ore. (KOIN) — A child was shot in the head Sunday afternoon in Oregon City.
Authorities now say the child has died from the wound.
Oregon City Police told KOIN the 9-year-old girl was shot possibly while someone was cleaning a handgun. A source close to the family said the girl had been shot in the face.
Police said she was in the backyard when she was hit with a bullet. They said the bullet appeared to have come from inside the house, likely traveling through a wall or door.
This afternoon shooting happened near the intersection of 12th and Division streets in Oregon City. Police secured the scene and processed it Sunday evening.
The girl was flown to OHSU hospital by LifeFlight helicopter. The Oregon City Police Department reported she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The shooter, identified by a 911 caller as possibly the mother’s boyfriend, is cooperating with police. Police are only saying the shooter was “an adult, familiar to the family.”
Neighbor Sam Solomon talked to KOIN Sunday, saying he could hear commotion down the street and helicopters flying low over his home.
“It’s a tragedy,” he said. “No matter what happens, any time a child gets hurt it’s a horrible thing.”
