SALEM, Ore. (AP/KOIN) — Eugene, Ore., will host the 2016 U.S. Olympic track and field trials.

USA Track & Field Chief Executive Max Siegel announced the decision Thursday at the Oregon state Capitol.

This will be the sixth time Eugene, dubbed TrackTown USA, has played host to the Olympic track trials. It has hosted the trials in 1972, 1976, 1980, 2008 and 2012.

Previous trials have been at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field — the only facility to host three consecutive U.S. Olympic Trials, according to the official homepage of the Oregon Ducks.

On Thursday Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber accepted the USA Track & Field offer to host the trials.

The trials will take place July 1t through July 10. U.S. athletes compete at the trials for a spot on Team USA.

The 2016 Summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro from Aug. 5 to 21.
