PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 28-year-old man is accused of stalking the woman he is accused of sexually assaulting.

Adam Duus made his first court appearance Monday afternoon in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by KOIN, the victim told detectives that she had been sexually assaulted by a man on the afternoon of March 20.

The victim said she first saw her attacker over two months prior to the assault, Deputy District Attorney Steve O’Hagan wrote in the court documents. The woman explained that a stranger was spying on her while she was inside her home. According the affidavit, the suspect would stand on the sidewalk and watch victim on a weekly occurrence between the hours of 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The victim told police she was confronted by Duus on her front porch about two weeks prior to the alleged rape. The woman told police that she was carrying groceries to the door when Duus tried to grab her. The victim was able to break free, run into the house and lock the door, court documents state. The man reportedly said that he wanted to talk to her, asked her name and told her “she was very pretty,” the affidavit reads. Before leaving the home, Duus, allegedly tried to open the front door.

On the day of the reported attack, the victim told police she woke up at about noon and started cleaning her kitchen, court documents state. When she went outside to empty the recycling, she saw the suspect on the street. The victim ran to the door, but told police, “he was on me before I could get to the door.”

Duus is accused of choking the woman and forcing her back inside her home. According to the court documents, Duus used the victim’s first name when he reportedly said, “I love you… I don’t want to hurt you.”

Portland police said Duus was armed with a knife and sexually assaulted the victim, then mad her shower at knife-point. Duus reportedly told the victim that if she called the police, he would come back and kill her and the police, court documents read.

The victim met with sex crimes detectives and described her attacker as a white man in his 30s, approximately 6-feet tall, thin, with a crooked nose, brown eyes, rotten teeth and dirty unkempt hair. The victim also told police that Duus was breathing through his mouth during the attack.

Based on that information, detectives began running surveillance on the surrounding neighborhood. On April 2, they stopped a man matching the suspect’s description walking across the street from the victim’s home. Officers followed the man to his home, where he was positively identified, court documents state.

Detectives learned that Duus has broken teeth that occurred after several seizures caused him to fall and damage his mouth. They also noticed that he would twitch with varying degrees of intensity as they questioned him, O’Hagan wrote. Duus explained that he regularly walks the exact same path in his neighborhood during lunch and he “notices various females along the route,” O’Hagan wrote. He denied having any involvement in the attack.

Detectives presented the victim with a photo lineup that included the suspect and she positively identified him as her attacker.

Duus is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, coercion and unlawful use of a weapon.

The case will go before a grand jury.

Duus’ next court appearance is scheduled for April 16. He remains lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center on $560,000 bail.
