ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon man serving a life sentence for one slaying has been accused of killing his 13-year-old stepdaughter in 1990.
The Albany Democrat-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/XfRCMf) that the body of Rachanda Lea Pickle was never found despite an extensive search after she disappeared.
Investigators wouldn’t disclose details but said advances in DNA testing were the foundation for the new charge against 63-year-old John Arthur Ackroyd.
Detective Mike Harmon says it’s hard to win convictions in cases where a body has not been found, but he said the prosecution would demonstrate that Pickle is dead.
Ackroyd made a court appearance Wednesday in Linn County and then was returned to the State Penitentiary.
He and another man were convicted in 1993 of killing Kaye Jean Turner in the Metolius River area in 1978.
